Haruka Kano
- Born in 1994, Shiga prefecture, based in Kyoto
Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1994, she is currently based in Kyoto. She graduated from the Department of Painting (Oil Painting Course), Faculty of Fine Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts in 2017, and completed her Master’s degree in Painting (Oil Painting) at the Graduate School of Arts of the same university in 2019.
Her practice begins with the perception and sensations she experiences when facing a landscape, which she translates onto the canvas. Rather than depicting the scene directly before her eyes, she paints the sense of a landscape that extends beyond the visible field—encompassing the areas outside her line of sight and even behind her. Kanno seeks to capture this multidirectional expanse by creating pictorial spaces that evoke the presence of what cannot be seen.
In her process, she aims to retain the freshness of spatial emergence as pictorial elements spontaneously weave together across the surface, pursuing a sense of depth that seems to shift and transform. Her exploration also extends to the physical nature of painting itself: she often builds her own wooden stretchers during the painting process to allow the image to extend around the edges, combines canvas with net-like materials, and employs mineral pigments, thereby investigating the material and spatial possibilities inherent in painting.
